The number of people who died in
the grisly road accident on
Nairobi-Naivasha highway has
increased from 11 to 40.
The accident which occurred on
Saturday evening, December 10
Karai on the busy highway
involved a fuel tanker and several
other vehicles.
"The fire caught cars on both
sides of the road. The truck
was coming from Nairobi, but
those heading to the city were
also burnt," Edwin Wafula, a
survivor who suffered burns on
his hand said.
The fuel tanker lost control and
burst into flames hitting other
vehicles which created a chain of
knocks.
Deputy commissioner Isaac
Masinde confirmed the number of
casualties with Red Cross officials
saying rescuers had taken 30
bodies to Naivasha Sub-County
Hospital Mortuary.
Infrastructure Permanent
Secretary says 9 GSU officers were
among those who perished in the
tanker tragedy.
The number of those perished is
expected to go up considering the
number of vehicles burnt in the
incident.
NTSA boss Francis Meja said 12
vehicles have been burnt
including a matatu, and the rest
were private.
Among the burnt vehicles was a
pick-up truck carrying
administration police officers, 3 of
them are among the dead. Eight
magazines of the guns they were
carrying were recovered.
